Physiotherapy is more than just pain relief
An eighty year old lady Ms.K walked in to a Physiotherapy clinic complaining of pain in the low back and middle of the back. Upon detailed Physiotherapy evaluation, it was found out that that lady had hairline fractures at multiple levels and was immobilized for couple of months. She had pain, discomfort, poor strength, poor balance, poor posture and difficulty in carrying on her day to day activities.
Physiotherapist gave her modalities in the form of cold pack, interferential therapy, TENS and hydroculator (heating pad) along with the education about importance of proper posture in lying, sitting, standing and walking, therapeutic exercises to improve her breathing capacity, gentle strengthening exercises to the extremities , static and dynamic balance exercises, fall prevention strategies and home program.
Ms. K. got rid of pain and discomfort after 6-8 weeks of comprehensive back rehab. So a good Physiotherapist will not only give the modalities for pain relief but also work on all the musculo-skeletal issues that affect a patient’s functional capacity. A well-structured Physiotherapy plan of treatment with good home program is essential for long term benefit.
