A lady got a call at 4.30 am from a stranger’s number saying that her husband has met with a car accident and he wanted her to rush to the accident spot. She used the presence of mind and common sense and called the nearby prestigious hospital emergency number asking for an ambulance to rush to the accident spot. In the mean time she took an auto rushed to the spot. By the time the ambulance arrived the spot she was there to guide the ambulance workers how to shift the patient from the car to the ambulance without twisting the spine and supporting or immobilizing the painful limbs (probable fracture).Since she is in the medical profession she was aware about the trauma care. Especially the first aid, basic life support and proper shifting at the accident spot is crucial. So proper handling in the accident spot will save lots of irreparable damage.
Everybody whether he/she is a medical or a non-medical person should attend a class on first-aid/basic life support-CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) training. In case of emergency he/she should be confident enough to use those skills in saving a life. Look for any head injury or spinal cord injury.Make sure the accident person is conscious and keep talking to him till the ambulance arrives. If he is not conscious, check his pulse and breathing. Try to make him lie down flat without any head support. Don’t give anything by mouth because he/she may aspirate. Start the CPR techniques (checking the pulse, seeing the breathing pattern, mouth to mouth breathing technique and chest massage in a sequential manner till the ambulance technicians arrive.
Once the trauma care team arrives the patient has to be shifted effectively without giving further injury to the head, spine and the limbs with the administration of emergency medication depends on the severity of the condition of the victim.
To summarize, trauma /accident victim’s life can be saved by proper handling of the patient in the accident spot. Those few minutes are crucial.
